Michael Arnowitt Piano Concert Saturday, October 1 to Highlight Music of Ukrainian Composer Victoria Poleva
Michael Arnowitt will offer a classical piano concert entitled “”Kaleidoscope” at Grace Church on-the-Hill on Saturday, October 1 at 7:30 pm in a special program featuring music bby the present-day Ukrainian composer Victoria Poleva. This Kiev-based composer, now in refuge in Germany due to the war, generously sent Michael Arnowitt a dozen of her piano pieces just two weeks before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Michael Arnowitt will perform four pieces by Victoria Poleva: the absorbing and deeply spiritual piano prelude to her ballet “Mirror, Dreams or A Little Life,” her mysterious “Lacrimosa” and tender “Music that is not yet” from her 1998 collection Marginalia, and her intense and dramatic “Sonata quasi una fantasia,” an epic large-canvas piece with influences of the music of Bach and Beethoven. Through concerts Michael Arnowitt is presenting in the United States and Canada this fall, this program marks the beginning of the pianist’s efforts to raise awareness in our part of the world of the music of this outstanding composer of today’s Ukraine. Also featured on the program are colourful, lively and evocative pieces by Debussy, Bach, Ligeti, Lutoslawski, the British composer George Benjamin, and Michael Arnowitt’s “Burana Bop,” an improvisation based on musical material from Carl Orff’s famous “Carmina Burana” inspired by 13th century medieval poetry.
Admission $20, $10 for students or people with disabilities, and free to refugees from Ukraine or other countries.
